Updated:2022-10-31

In the golden autumn, the sweet smell of osmanthus was wafting. On October 29, when the 116th anniversary of the university was coming, the Department of Systems Science held an alumni salon activity with the theme of "enrich systems thinking, systematically cultivate talents". Gu Changgui, the head of the Department, hosted the activity. Professor Gao Yan, the leader of systems science, Liu Yuanhua, the secretary of the party of the Department, and more than 100 people including faculty members, undergraduate students, master students, doctoral students, and post-doc students of the Department of Systems Science participated in this gathering. The four invited guests: Guan Yasong, Manager of the Marketing Department of Shanghai Hongshuangxi Co., Ltd., Professor Wu Guolin, Dean of the School of Science of Guilin Institute of Aerospace Technology, Gao Jian, Associate Professor of Anqing Normal University and Deputy Director of the Provincial Key Laboratory, and Li Zepeng, Baidu Algorithm Engineer, were the 1997 undergraduate, 2022 doctoral, 2021 doctoral and 2022 graduate students of the Department of System Science respectively. As representatives of outstanding alumni, they had a harmonious, detailed and in-depth communication with the present teachers and students from the four aspects: career development, discipline building, scientific research road and employment planning.

At the beginning of the salon, Gu Changgui delivered a speech, introducing the origin and development of the systems science of USST, highlighting the advantages of the systems science department in systematically cultivating talents. He emphasized that the discipline and alumni are a system, that is, while the discipline continues to develop and grow, many outstanding alumni have been cultivated. In turn, the development of the discipline is inseparable from the support of alumni. Following this, the salon entered the keynote speech session, and four alumni guests delivered speeches in turn for the purpose of sharing frontier information and practical work experience in the industry.

Guan Yasong summarized his more than 20-year work experience and condensed that confidence and opportunities come from systematic thinking, team spirit comes from systematic methodology, and the application comes from systematic thinking". By enumerating real cases such as how DOUBLE HAPPINESS systematically analyzed the market development trend in the post epidemic era, formulated a multi-objective marketing strategy for top users and ordinary users, dynamically adjusted planning scheme using the black box theory, and articulated the plan for the organizing the international table tennis events. The cases helped people build confidence in using systems thinking to solve problems in the professional work.

Wu Guolin, with the theme of building and developing the big data specialty by using systems thinking, described how to grasp the essence of the big data specialty through holistic thinking, and optimize the planning scheme for the development of the big data field through continuous iteration. Specific measures include mining the core market demand from big data, formulating a scientific undergraduate training program, designing the technical route for field improvement, and distinguishing between main branches and sub branches, and edit and distribute the professional learning guide manual for college students. Dean Wu's experience sharing was of great significance for the development of the Department of Systems Science.

Gao Jian, taking his scientific research direction as the starting point, expounded the positive influence and guiding role of systems thinking on his academic work, and pointed out that system theory, as a universal methodology, is the most advanced thinking mode that human beings have mastered so far, and systems thinking is the only solution to many complex problems in the real world.

Li Zepeng shared his growth insights from three aspects: "my postgraduate life", "my job search process" and "my working experience", and summarized the methods and skills of how to arrange time systematically and efficiently, how to balance employment and thesis work, and how to understand market demand through continuous internship and resume submission.

At the last communication and interaction session, teachers and students actively raised questions. Guan Yasong answered the questions about what work skills enterprises need students to have. Wu Guolin further shared relevant experience on how to systematically set up and optimize basic courses and professional courses. Gao Jian gave a thoughtful answer to the questions what young teachers should pay attention to in applying for national fund projects. Li Zepeng exchanged ideas on how to systematically handle the relationship between competition and scientific research through the method of grasping main contradictions.

This alumni activity has promoted the contact and exchange between students and alumni, condensed the strength of alumni, provided teachers with valuable experience in using systems methodology to support discipline development, and improved students' ability to grasp the industry development and practical needs by using systems thinking.
