On October 29, the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology held the 2022 Seminar for the Development of Transport Engineering field with the theme “Start the Future, Open a New Chapter”. On the semiar, the development of transportation engineering in our university was summarized, and experts' opinions was articulated for the deployment of the next step.
The meeting invited more than a dozen influential experts in the subject area to give suggestions for the development of transportation engineering of USST. Professor Sun Yuedong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of USST, Professor Cui Guomin, Executive Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, Professor Peng Bin, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, Professor Zhao Laijun, Dean of the Business School, Professor Zhang Yongqing, Deputy Dean of the Business School, Professor Han Yin, Leader of the Transportation Engineering department, and Professor Zhang Zhendong, Director of the Department of Vehicle Engineering of the school of mechanical engineering, attended the meeting.
Sun Yuedong introduced the history and "5+1 discipline layout of USST and hope that the traffic and transportation engineering can become a new growth point of the university so as to establish the goal and confidence for the discipline development. Cui Guomin introduced the degree program development and postgraduate education of USST, and put forward higher expectations for the development of the traffic and transportation engineering discipline of our school. Zhao Laijun summerised the recent achievements of the traffic and transportation engineering of our school from the aspects of faculty, scientific research, talent cultivation, social services, and etc. Han Yin made a detailed report on the latest development of the transportation engineering in our school from the aspects of discipline direction and features, teams, education environment and conditions, discipline construction, and etc. Fourteen experts from Southeast University, Wuhan University of Technology, Zhejiang University, South China University of Technology, Beihang University and other universities commented on the development of our transportation engineering in turn, and provided many important guidance and pertinent suggestions for the discipline to apply for doctorate programs in transportation engineering in the future from different perspectives.
Experts attending the meeting pointed out that the transportation engineering discipline of our school has a long history, distinctive characteristics, and a capable team, and has achieved good results. By actively participating in the traffic security of major national activities, responding to the national call of "the Belt and Road", and promoting the deployment of China Railway Express. The discipline has made important contributions to social development, and are qualified to apply for doctoral programs.
The experts at the meeting emphasized that in order to improve competitiveness, the transportation engineering discipline of our university should better orientate the major strategic needs of the country such as "basically building China's strength in transportation", refine the featured directions, integrate resources inside and outside the university, and lay a solid foundation for the next round of application for doctoral programs. It is suggested to focus on the frontiers of disciplines and deeply explore the supporting role and significance of discipline development for national and local major strategies; Focusing on the existing research foundation of the discipline, accurately refine the research direction of the discipline features and form the disciplinary distinctive regionalized and modernized advantages; Further integrate internal and external resources, expand the discipline team, introduce and cultivate high-level talents, and create a more influential discipline platform; Strengthen organized scientific research and concentrate on declaring higher level scientific and technological achievements and teaching achievements; Actively undertake various activities and academic conferences of the discipline, actively participate in the building of national and industrial key laboratories, and expand the discipline influence in industry.
