Business School Held Seminar on Discipline Competition for the Undergraduates

On September 2, business school held a seminar on discipline competition for the undergraduates. Vice Dean Zhang Zheng, the directors of each department, teachers' representatives and members of Academic Affairs Office attended the seminar. The seminar was hosted by Vice Dean Zhang Zheng.

Director of Academic Affairs Office Shu Yiming introduced the general status quo of the discipline competition for the undergraduates in our business school, and scrutinized and analyzed the effectiveness, problems and difficulties of participating in the discipline competition based on the experience of first half of 2022. In line with the annual performance assessment index and the actual situation of our business school, the plan and support policies for participating in discipline competition in the second half of 2022 were proposed.

Tang Qiao introduced the practical experience and results of the Department of International Trade in organizing and participating in the National University Business Elite Challenge in many years. She pointed out that the Department of International Trade has always adhered to the concept of the competition, Never forget why you started, and your mission can be accomplished. The Department of International Trade has boldly innovated the form of the competition, formed an effective competition model of choosing suitable competition projects + organizing a competent teacher guidance team + building student clubs for competition, and won a large number of high-level awards, leading to a competitive advantage in international trade competitions.

Zhu Xiaodong shared his experience in organizing and guiding students in competition using the “National University Student Competition on E-commerce: Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship” as an example. He summarized five aspects, including competition topic selection, student team formation, guiding team, school support and event analysis, taking especially emphasized the importance of student competition team building. It is important to motivate students to participate in the competition, select high potential students, cultivate them continuously, and form competition teams with different grades, cross-college and cross-discipline.

Li Wenxiang shared his experience in guiding undergraduates to participate in the National University Student Competition for Transportation Science and Technology and the China-US Youth Creativity Competition. He pointed out that by mobilizing students to participate in faculty research projects, University student innovation and entrepreneurship projects, and courses with research projects, students can effectively cultivate their interest in the discipline competitions and help them find valuable topics for competition. Teachers should make efforts to share their scientific research results, which would be beneficial to form effective mechanisms and paths that help to develop students' innovation and entrepreneurial abilities.

After that, the department heads introduced the current participation in  competitions and students' awards in their departments, and had a heated discussion on the working plan for participating in competition in the second half of the year. The departments expressed that they would try their best to promote students to participate in this semester's competition and plan in advance to organize students participating in A level discipline competition next year.

Finally, Vice Dean Zhang Zheng pointed out that discipline competitions are not only an important way to cultivate students' innovation and entrepreneurial ability, but also a core indicator to measure the quality of talent cultivation of each discipline. All departments should learn from each other's experience, focus on the A level discipline competition, form its own characteristics, promote teaching, and learning with the competition, and further enhance the undergraduate talent cultivation ability of each department.

The seminar of discipline competition provides an opportunity for each department to learn from the experience and discuss the difficulties in organizing and guiding student in discipline competition. It is conducive to promoting the high-quality development of discipline competition in our school and continuously improving the quality of undergraduate talent cultivation.
