In the afternoon of September 3, the Business School USST held the opening ceremony for the new students of MBA, MPA, MEM, MPAcc, MF and MIB of class 2022 both online and offline. The main offline venue was located in the second meeting room on the fourth floor of Building A in Business School. Vice President, Prof. Liu Ping, Vice Executive President of Graduate School, Prof. Cui Minguo, Dean of Business School and Director of Professional Degree Education Center, Prof. Zhao Laijun, Secretary of Party Committee of Business School, Prof. Ma Jingbo, Vice Dean and Deputy Director of Professional Degree Education Center, Prof. Zhang Yongqing, Vice Dean and Director of MBA Program, Prof. Zhang Zheng, Vice Dean and Deputy Director of MBA Program, Vice Dean, Prof. He Jianjia, Vice Dean and Deputy Secretary of Party Committee, Prof. Pu Yingying, and Director of MPA Program, Prof. Che Liping, Director of MEM Program, Professor Ye Chunming, Deputy Director of MPAcc Program , Associate Professor Yu Qianlong, Director of MF Program , Professor Gao Guangkuo, teachers' representatives, and all teachers of Comprehensive Office of Professional Degree Education Center attended the ceremony in the main hall. The new students of the 2022 MBA, MPa, MEM, MPAcc, MF and MIB participated in the opening ceremony online and offline. The opening ceremony was hosted by Vice Dean Zhang Yongqing.
Dean Zhao Laijun delivered the first speech representing the Business School. On behalf of all the faculty and students in the Business School USST, he extended a warm welcome and congratulations to the new students of the Class of 2022. In his speech, Dean Zhao introduced that the total number of enrollment of MBA/MPA/MEM/ MPAcc/MF/MIB (6M) in the Professional Degree Education Center of the Business School is at a record high this year. He systematically reviewed the 100-year history of development in business education in the Business School, as well as the positioning of the Business School, including its objectives, core values, departmental specialties and talent cultivation goals.
Dean Zhao pointed out that generations of people from the Business School have silently made great efforts and contributions, forging ahead in talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, cultural heritage and innovation, and forming the distinctive characteristics of the Business School, which can be summarized in three words: high, large and comprehensive. Regarding to high level, the discipline systems science is the first-class discipline of Shanghai's high-level universities. According to the fourth-round evaluation of the Ministry of education, systems science ranks third in the nationwide; Management science and engineering is a plateau discipline in Shanghai, ranking 19th in China. In 2018, the Business School was accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), becoming the 20th college in the Chinese mainland and the first college not directly under the Ministry of Education accredited, marking its entry into the international elite business schools. In December 2020, the school became a full member of EFMD. In December 2021, the school formally joined the UN’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), becoming the 28th university in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) to sign up this initiative. Regarding to large scale, the school has 277 faculty members, including 221 full-time teachers. Each year, nearly 700 undergraduates, more than 700 graduate students and about 30 doctoral students are enrolled. The school has nearly 4,500 students at all levels. Regarding to comprehensive scope, the school has a full range of academic disciplines, covering four disciplines: management, economics, science and engineering, six of which are first-level disciplines. The school has a full range of education levels, including undergraduate, master, doctor and post-doctor. The school has 12 undergraduate majors. Six first-level disciplines have academic master programs and two first-level disciplines has doctoral program. The school has 11 professional master programs and two postdoctoral stations. It is very rare in China to have such a cross-disciplinary management school.
At the end of his speech, Dean Zhao gave three suggestions to the new students: First, to clarify the goal: An aspiring person must be perseverance, as there is a long way to go; Second, to set high aspirations: if you do not have a high goal, nothing can be accomplished in the world; third, to insist on life-long learning: my life has an end, but knowledge has no end. Dean Zhao hope the students can realize their career transformation and improve comprehensive quality to serve the country and repay the society.
Ma Jingbo, Secretary of the Party of the Business School, announced the decision of the scholarships for MBA, MPA, MEM and MPAcc in 2022 for the Freshman First Choice Joint Examination Award and the Comprehensive Quality Award. The leaders and guests presented the Honorary Certificate to the winners.
The Associate Professor Luo Guofen from the Department of Public Administration, as a representative of the faculty, warmly welcomed the new students of the 2022 Class of 6M professional degree, congratulating them on entering this beautiful campus with rich history and joining the flourishing family of the Business School. Dr. Luo instructed the new students that on-job-learning is hard and such learning opportunities are extremely precious. He hoped that students should master the systematic thinking method, learn to coordinate and balance all the tasks, do a good job of time management, condense the research questions that need to be addressed, cherish the time and challenge themselves. Finally, Dr. Luo sincerely wished the students to become a brave explorer and a good innovator, to have a positive mind and a strong body, to become a managerial personal full of positive energy, and to be an excellent alumnus that USST can be proud of.
Zhang He, an MPA student of Class 2021, spoke on behalf of the past senior students. He sent his sincere greetings and warm welcome to the new students from all over the world! He sincerely hoped that the students would never forget the initial intention, keep the enthusiasm, firmly believe in the ideal, and keep the hope in their hearts. He hoped that the students could endure the hardships of traveling, handle the stress of continuous classes, the twists and turns of starting a thesis, and the dilemma of balancing work and study. Because, only in this way, we can mature through pain and grow strong through trials and tribulations.
At the end of the ceremony, Vice President Liu Ping expressed a warm welcome to all the new 6M students on behalf of the whole school faculty and staff!
Vice President Liu Ping said, Every year I attend the opening ceremony of the professional degree of the Business School, and this year I feel that there are great changes. There are more and more professional degrees, from MBA, MPA, MEM (3M) to the current 6M, which shows that the Business School is developing and flourishing. The university attaches great importance to the development of the Business School and has strengthened the leadership the Business School. Vice President Liu Ping systematically reviewed the history the Business School development, as well as the outstanding contributions management science and systems science have made to Shanghai and the country in scientific research, talent cultivation, and service to society, emphasizing that the Business School is a school with long history, featured disciplinaries and social influence in USST. Vice President Liu Ping pointed out that in order to promote the Business School to a new level and realize new achievement, the university plans to further support the Business School in the development of disciplines and the innovation of talent cultivation in the new inter-disciplinary areas.
At the end of his speech, Vice President Liu Ping hoped that the students would grasp the direction of their lives during their studies at USST, strive to live up to their full potential, strive to make break through and become the outstanding talents needed for the development of the Party and the country!
