Students of the Business School Achieved Good Results in the China-US Young Maker Competition

From August 20 to 21, the global finals of the 2022 China-US youth maker competition were successfully held. After two rounds of online roadshow and evaluation, the undergraduate team supervised by Dr. Li Wenxiang won the third prize in the international competition. Previously, the team won the first prize in the Shanghai competition after three rounds of evaluation, and represented Shanghai to participate in the global finals.

The China-US Young Maker Competition is organized by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and hosted by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Tsinghua University and the Science and Technology Park Alliance of Chinese Universities, which is an A-level disciplinary competition recognized by the China association of high education. The competition aims to promote the culture and ecology of makers in China and the U.S., to help optimize the environment of young creator communities and crowdsourcing spaces, and to help the growth and success of young creators. With the theme of Creating the Future Together, the competition centers on the common challenges and opportunities of climate change and sustainable development, and focuses on community, education, environmental protection, health, transportation, energy and other sustainable development fields, advocating young creators to start from the concept of community with a shared future for mankind, combined with forward thinking and design innovation and empowering creativity with technology to create green, tolerant and sustainable products. 

The 2022 China-US Young Maker Competition was held from May to August in Beijing, Chengdu, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Xi'an, Xiamen, Wenzhou, Haikou, Shenyang, Suzhou and Wuhan, attracting nearly 10,000 young creators from China and the U.S. and submitted more than 2,400 innovative works. After three months of fierce competition, 426 young creators from 86 teams in China and the U.S. advanced to the global finals with their outstanding works. In the end, one international grand prize, three first prizes, six second prizes and 15 third prizes were awarded, which is less than 2%.

The project Carbon Wallet - MaaS-enabled Carbon Inclusion Platform for Urban Green Travel by Zero Carbon Xiantong Team (members: Yang Zijie, Li Cihang, Tang Shihang, Xie Xinyu, Zhu Yijun) from the Department of Transportation Systems Engineering of our school won the third prize with the guidance of Dr. Li Wenxiang and the cooperation of the team members, after five rounds of fierce competition both in Shanghai and the global finals, which is so far the best result our school have achieved. During the more than three months preparation process, the instructor Li Wenxiang invested a lot of time and energy to counsel the project from various angles, such as product design, business model, technical points, demonstration video, etc., and made professional and detailed suggestions for improvement. The participating students studied new technologies and methods, worked day and night, and constantly polished and improved their works. All the hard work laid the foundation of the achievement. At the same time, Vice Dean Zhang Zheng, Director of Academic Affairs Shu Yiming and Director of Transportation Systems Engineering Liu Weiwei took the initiative to care for the competition and provide overall support, which offered a solid guarantee for the team to complete the project successfully.

Through participating in this China-US youth maker competition, the students are not only stimulated with innovative thinking and enthusiasm, but also demonstrated the innovative ability and achievements on the international stage, which played a positive role in promoting the reform of our innovation and entrepreneurship education and improving the quality of innovative talents cultivation.
